The First Conference on e-Learning and Distance Education
Distance education is defined as a mechanism for formal and informal education in which education/ training activity occurs between students/learners and instructors who are separated by geographical distances.

e-Learning is the modern incarnation of distance education that uses modern electronic technologies for the provision of instructions and learning content. It involves various communication mechanisms such as Internet, cell phones, television, radio etc.

Modern e-Learning technologies are very sophisticated and efficient and include Learning Management Systems, moderated and threaded discussion boards,
email messages, chat rooms, audio and video conferencing, satellite broadcasts etc.

The use of computer assisted teaching and involvement of Internet technology has made e-Learning more convenient and interactive as compared to traditional distance education methods. An instructor can easily elaborate ideas and learners can better grasp concepts if these are presented in the form of electronic contents such as animated graphics and multimedia demonstrations etc. e-Learning has also improved related areas such as quality of instruction, accessibility to contents and instructors, and cost of delivery of education.

The Virtual University is Pakistan’s first university based completely on modern Information and Communication Technologies. It provides quality education at extremely affordable cost to students in Pakistan and abroad. The unique model evolved by VU is becoming a reference for other organizations/institutions providing learning/training through electronic and traditional means.
